Two Wheel Drive is nice...

...but you don't NEED TWD to commute in the winter. What you do need is good tires with a block tread. Dirt oriented dualsport treads, trials tires or knobbies work best. This KLR has Kenda K270s on it, somewhat worn, no chains or studs. You can see I am using my weight to control the rig on the snow: I put thepassenger pegs down before I started. To climb hills I stand on the rear pegs and shift my weight aft to give the rear wheel traction. I move forward over the front wheel to get bite for turning. I stay off the brakes when turning, getting my speed down before I am in the corner and carrying that speed through the turn. Smooth input at the controls is the key to riding on slick surfaces!

Nice Vern. I miss the snow and wish we had it over on this side of the hill!
